Workshop Themes
Figure Drawing
During this workshop, we explore a range of drawing techniques and exercises using a real-life model as our inspiration. This is not your typical life drawing class - it’s gestural, fun, and with a focus on how we can capture the energy and essence of the model through different drawing techniques.
Materials:
Charcoal, white chalk, pencils, smudger stick, ink, textured papers.
Inverting Space
During this workshop, we explore various drawing exercises such as Sketching to music and blind drawing, then dive into a painting technique called Inverting Space. We draw inspiration from objects and reference images (or still life display), to create abstract shapes and compositions on canvas. We experiment using colour, line, composition, scale and layering.
Materials:
Pencil, Acrylic paint, canvas, paper.
Modelling Paste
During this workshop, we draw inspiration from a custom still life arrangement (E.g. fruit, ceramics, sculptures). We mix acrylic paint with a medium called ‘modelling paste’ to create a thick texture, then apply it onto our canvas using palette knives. This workshop is about building ‘out’ from the canvas, using tools instead of paintbrushes, and thinking about light and shadow.
Materials:
Pencil, acrylic paint, modelling paste, palette knife, canvas.
Messy Monochrome Portraits
During this workshop, we learn how to create a self-portrait using black and white acrylic paint, modelling paste, brushes and palette knives. We explore building texture and manipulating light and dark shades to suggest form.
Materials:
Pencil, black and white paint, modelling paste, canvas.
